Aluminerie Alouette: Creating Efficiencies

Cutter barge Alouette Spirit with Wilf Seymour tug

Reducing environmental impact: Cutter Marine has been under contract with Aluminerie Alouette for the transportation of aluminum ingots since 2005. Our marine transport solution provides efficient loading and discharge for up to 10,500 mt per shipment. We often carry split loads for multiple ports in a single voyage.

Modality Conversion (Truck/Rail to Marine): The aluminum was previously transported by truck and rail, with trucking causing congestion on a limited stretch of highway and adding significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Cutter supported the Alouette team to provide an end-to-end solution to support the development of a new logistics strategy and drive significant cost reduction centered around a highly efficient marine solution.

Customer: Aluminerie Alouette

Location: Sept-Iles, QC to multiple Great Lakes ports
Date: 2005 to present

The Challenge: Provide supply chain support for cargo movement to reduce highway congestion and environmental impact.

Our Solution: Cutter provideda dedicated tug-and-barge unit to move cargo from the production facility in the company’s home port in Quebec to multiple Great Lakes ports in Canada and the United States.

While delivering efficient and reliable transportation for Alouette, we added various other backhaul cargo to reduce overall costs for Alouette. For example, during one trip, we carried about 7,000 mt of agri-products out of the Great Lakes on our return trip to Sept-Iles, exceeding our annual tonnage commitment while maintaining Alouette’s rigorous schedule and reducing their costs.
